Located off Interstate 880 in
Fremont, CA, The Country Way is a modest, non-descript restaurant. It doesn’t
have any flashy lights but the name “The Country Way” caught our eye as we were
looking for a place to stop for dinner. We drove east on Mowry Avenue and didn’t
find anything as interesting, we turned around and headed back to The Country
Way. Even though it was an hour before closing, they still had a decent amount
of folks inside the restaurant. The interior reminded me of a log cabin turned
ranch house. It just makes you feel at home. The service is relaxed and friendly.
Clam Chowder Cup (Friday Only) is served with bread
and butter. The chowder was creamy and had minced carrots in it which was unexpected.
There was a decent amount of clams and slightly briny flavor. Rating: 4/5
Mixed Green Salad is served with your choice of
French, Italian, ranch, thousand island, Roquefort, or oil & vinegar along
with bread and butter. There was a healthy mix of lettuce, radicchio, red
onion, garbanzo, and kidney beans. The Roquefort dressing was amazing but
really should be called bleu cheese dressing. Huge chunks of bleu cheese were
stuffed into the creamy dressing base. Rating: 4.5/5
Fried Chicken is served with soup or salad, vegetables,
and your choice of potato (country fried potatoes, steak fries, or baked
potato). This was one of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The outside was
simply seasoned and fried to a perfect crispy golden brown. The meat inside was
juicy and tender. It’s a half a chicken (breast, wing, thigh, and drumstick) so
you will definitely need a doggie bag, unless you’re totally famished. The
vegetables (green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, red bell peppers, and squash)
were cooked perfectly keeping their bright color and crisp texture. Baked
potato was baked just right with tender interior. Rating: 5/5
Fresh Beef Liver topped with onions or bacon and
served with soup or salad, vegetables, and your choice of potato (country fried
potatoes, steak fries, or baked potato). The beef liver was perfectly fried
with a caramelized exterior and tender inside. I grew up having liver, one of the
many tasty dishes prepared by my Dad. It has a flavor all its own with hints of
iron and mineral, something you’ll either love or dislike. The huge amount of thick
cut bacon slices brought a salty, smoky flavor to the mix which enhanced the
liver flavor which I love. The steak fries were perfectly fried to a golden
brown, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I used the leftover Roquefort
dressing for dipping. Rating: 5/5
