Wolf Bay Lodge is a local seafood tradition in Orange Beach, Alabama

After recovering from my food coma of bacon and steak at the World Food Championships, it was time for some seafood for dinner. Wolf Bay Lodge began its story in the 1940’s as a bait shop along the shoreline of Wolf Bay in Elberta, AL. In 1973, Charlie and Sandra Wrape purchased this bait shop and turned it into a seafood restaurant with a menu created by ladies that worked there and lived in the vicinity. Even with its “off the beaten path” location, it soon became a favorite for locals and visitors alike. On December 7, 2008, a fire completely destroyed the entire lodge. Since then, two locations have been built; one in Orange Beach and the other in Foley. Charlie and Sandra’s daughter, Charlene Haber, continues her family’s legacy of high quality, fresh meals in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Here are some menu items to try:

With my visit to Olympic Shellfish fresh in my mind, Crab Claws were the logical choice as an appetizer. The appetizer portion is a half-pound of fried blue crab claws. The breading is light with a crispy, golden brown exterior. The crab claw meat was tender and flaky with a little bit of sweetness. This portion is great to share between two people yet is a very light appetizer. Rating: 4.5/5

Seafood Dinners include one trip to the salad bar, hushpuppies, and a choice of baked potato, sweet potato, rice pilaf, sautéed vegetables, or French fries (or sweet potato fries for an extra $1).

Their salad bar is small but has many of the choices that you would want on your salad. I made myself a mix of greens topped with ranch dressing, olives, shredded cheese, hard-boiled egg crumbles, and garbanzo beans.

Peel and Eat Shrimp is one pound of seasoned boiled Gulf shrimp served on ice. The shrimp were very easy to peel and had thin shells. The sweet shrimp contrasted nicely with the Cajun spiced salt on the outside. The house made cocktail sauce was a little different than I am used to, more tomato in flavor with a chunky texture, but overall it had a nice flavor. Rating: 4.5/5

  1. That seafood looks great. Especially those crab claws! I love your reviews, they're so pragmatic and to the point. I might give this place a try, but Mike always wants to go somewhere that holds tables with a reservation. He says he had enough of waiting for food during his army days!

    1. Thanks, Crystal! Crab claws pretty much anywhere in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach are amazing! If you need a place for a reservation, try Cosmo's in Orange Beach.
