As a Kansas City Barbeque Society
Certified Barbeque Judge (CBJ) and food/travel writer, I travel to different
barbeque competitions where I: Judge and taste the best barbeque around;
Collect signatures to become a Master Judge; Learn about the teams and their
cook; And visit new places around our great country. On this trip, we were on
our way to Laughlin, NV for the Smoke
on the Water USA Barbecue Championship where I judged and the hubby
followed the 7 Sins BBQ Team during
their cook.
We decided to “hang our hat” at Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall,
a short drive on Casino Drive from the barbeque competition. It has a quaint, rustic
look and feel from the street, like Vegas in its infancy or a mining town like
Virginia City.
But Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall is a Riverfront resort,
just steps away from the Colorado River. They have many of the amenities you
might expect: large pool deck with whirlpool spa, sandy beach area along the
river, and close, convenient parking. Since the hotel is only three stories, you
don’t have to ride elevators and walk a mile to and from the parking structure.
The hotel also boasts 416 rooms (including 30 pet-friendly rooms, 80 with
riverfront views, and 30 River Front Suites). If you are traveling with a
group, the Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall is one of the few hotels in
Laughlin that offers adjoining rooms for a fun and convenient stay with your
friends and family.
- Travel tip: The Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall is a pet-friendly hotel. It is best to call in advance for a reservation to request a pet-friendly room as there are only 30 available.
The River Front Suites are spacious. It features a king bed, 2
large sunny windows overlooking the Colorado River and landscaped river walk
area, cable television, air conditioning, tub/shower combination, dual sink
vanity, sitting area, loveseat, large closet, small refrigerator, coffee maker,
and work desk.
- Travel tip: There are only 30 River Front Suites at the Pioneer Hotel & Gambling Hall. Reservations can only be made over the phone.
The hotel also has on-site restaurants to feed your hunger and
bars to grab your favorite libations. Bumbleberry Flats is a new restaurant
that is open 24 hours a day and features American comfort food (in-depth blog
post coming soon). Carve Deli & Market is where you can stop in for great
sandwiches featuring Boar’s Head meats, snacks,
desserts, or just pick up ingredients and have a sandwich making party in your
room (in-depth blog post coming soon). In Sassy Sue’s Saloon, you can play your
favorite video poker games, enjoy cocktails and specialty draft beers,
experience a spectacular view of the Colorado River, dance to a song on their
bumpin’ jukebox, cheer for your favorite team on their big flat screen TVs, or
even play a game of pool or beer pong (pitchers start at $7).
Stayed tuned for more as I take an in-depth look at Bumbleberry
Flats and Crave Deli & Market!
