It all started with a little
girl baking alongside her grandmothers, Mildred and Madeline. This little
girl’s name is Susie. Her grandmothers lived across the street from each other
(this is how Susie’s mom and dad met) and Susie could go from one house to the
other to bake from scratch delicious goodies in her grandmothers’ kitchens. As Susie
grew up, she went to Cornell University’s School of Hotel and Restaurant
Administration, and began working in the corporate world. Susie started in
event planning and catering with Hyatt Hotels, House of Blues, and renowned
hospitality groups. In 2003, she opened Zinc Bistrot in Portland, OR and served
as the managing partner. But, the little Susie side of her longed for home
baked treats just like her grandmothers used to make. In 2006, with her savvy business
acumen and her grandmothers’ recipes, Susan Sarich founded SusieCakes in
Brentwood, CA.

If you’ve never tried
SusieCakes before, here are some items you might like:
Luscious Lemon Cake is moist
layers of vanilla cake filled with smooth and tart lemon curd, topped with
vanilla buttercream, and sanding sugar. The sanding sugar on the outside makes
the cake sparkle like a jewel. The cake is very moist and the lemon curd has
just the right amount of tartness to balance with the sweet buttercream
frosting. This would pair well with hot tea, mild coffee, or La Pincoya Sauvignon Blanc (enhances the lemon citrus flavor in the cake without the tartness). Rating:
4.5/5
Tropical Coconut Cake is
vanilla caked layered with pineapple-accented coconut filling then topped with
fluffy coconut buttercream and shredded coconut. This cake is like the ultimate
Pina colada cake. The pineapple helps to keep the cake moist and matches
deliciously with the coconut. Reminiscent of something my grandma would have
made me in Hawaii. This would pair well with hot tea, nut flavored coffee like
hazelnut, coconut, or amaretto, or Canella Prosecco (enhances the pineapple flavor). Rating: 5/5
Vanilla Celebration Cake is
six layers of vanilla cake baked with colorful sugar confetti and frosted with
retro-blue vanilla frosting. The cake is moist and the confetti just makes it
fun with the dots of bright color peeking throughout the cake. The retro-blue
frosting reminds me of 1950s kitchen appliances with a pastel palette. This
particular cake is great for celebrations like birthdays, graduations, bridal
showers, and even baby gender reveals where the interior is decorated in either
pink or blue. This would pair well with hot tea, bold coffee, or Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine (honey aroma and flavor pair well with the buttercream frosting for a more
decadent bite). Rating: 4.5/5
Carrot Cake is layered with
unique “praline filling” and topped with traditional cream cheese frosting. The
cake is nutty and not too spiced. The praline filling is fantastic and gives
luscious down-south flavor with the creamy cream cheese frosting. This would
pair well with hot tea, nut flavored coffee like hazelnut, coconut, or
amaretto, or Joel Gott Riesling.
Rating: 5/5
Susie’s Famous Southern Red
Velvet is deep red, moist cake lightly flavored with cocoa, filled and topped
with traditional cream cheese frosting. Even though the cocoa is light, the
chocolate flavor does come through and works well with the cream cheese
frosting. One of the best red velvet cakes I’ve ever had! This would pair well
with bold coffee, cappuccino, or Rosa Regale (fruity flavor
works well with the chocolate flavor in the cake). Rating: 5/5
Classic Marble Cake is
vanilla and chocolate cake marbled together with chocolate chips then filled
and frosted with vanilla and chocolate buttercream. The cake is fluffy and
moist. The combination of vanilla and chocolate is wonderful, like a swirled
soft serve cone. The chocolate chips add texture and spikes of chocolate
flavor. This would pair well with bold coffee, espresso, café au lait, or Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir (enhances the chocolate flavor of the cake). Rating: 5/5
Old-Fashioned 6-Layer
Chocolate Cake is a high-towering moist chocolate cake filled and covered in
rich, chocolate buttercream frosting. The chocolate cake is fluffy. This is a
chocoholic’s dream cake! This would pair well with bold coffee, espresso, café
au lait, macchiato, or Dow’s Tawny Port (enhances the bittersweet chocolate notes in the cake). Rating: 4.5/5
Frosted Sugar Cookies
(decorated star cookies with red, white, and blue sanding sugar on top for
Memorial Day Weekend) are buttery and have a soft-baked texture. Pick up some
for your backyard party this weekend! Rating: 5/5
7-Layer Bar is packed full of
flavors and textures. It looks healthy like a granola bar, but it is more like
a decadent cross between a cookie and brownie. It has chocolate chips, toasted
coconut, butterscotch chips, and more. Just looking at it made me excited! Once
I bit into it, I was mesmerized! Rating: 5/5
Chocolate Chip Cookies are
HUGE! It is monster cookie sized and packed full of chocolate chips. It has a
soft-baked texture and is a little chewy. Rating: 5/5
Classic Chocolate Brownie is
just busting out with rich, decadent chocolate flavor. For a brownie, it is
very moist with a fudge-like texture. A scoop of vanilla on top would seal the
deal. Rating: 5/5
Whoopie Pie brings me back to
a trip to Philadelphia where I had my first Pennsylvania Dutch Whoopie Pie. The
Pennsylvania Dutch make theirs with domed cake sandwich with fluffy frosting in
the middle. SusieCakes is a little different. The outer “sandwich” parts are a
cross between a cookie and a brownie. They are sturdy making easy to hold yet
yield to cutting or chomping. The buttercream frosting in the middle is creamy
and fluffy. Rating: 5/5
Flourless Peanut Butter
Cookies (gluten free) is a delicate cookie. It has a soft-baked texture but is
full of peanut butter flavor. They even crisscross the top with a fork just
like grandma! Rating: 5/5
