Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Restaurant and Market in Long Beach, California

Forrest Gump started it all as we watched the events in his fictional life unfold. Mama was right, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” One fictional life event did come true with the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Restaurant and Market. The first one opened in 1996 on Cannery Row in Monterey, CA. Since then, they have grown to 40 locations including Long Beach, CA next to the Aquarium of the Pacific. After a day at the aquarium, we decided to grab a late lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Old Fashioned New England Clam Chowder had a good flavor, but was a little watery. A more robust roux needs to be used to help thicken the chowder. It also needs be served hotter. The chowder was lukewarm at best. Rating: 3/5

Shrimper’s Net Catch is peel n’ eat shrimp steamed in beer with a choice of Bubba’s Garlic Spice or Secret Recipe Cajun Spice. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. It was so good that you really didn’t have to peel it. I ate it shell and all. The garlic sauce was finger-licking good. I loved the presentation! Rating: 5/5

Shrimp Po’ Boy is a toasted French loaf stuffed with warm popcorn shrimp, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, mayo, and served with fries. It was simple yet satisfying. The French bread had a crispy crust with soft, tender interior. The light and flaky batter made the shrimp really pop. You will know why this is a Southern favorite! Rating: 5/5

Texas Cajun Chicken Sandwich is Cajun grilled chicken breast, crisp bacon, pepper jack cheese, fresh guacamole, chili ancho mayo, served on a toasted bun with fries. It was a very flavorful sandwich. The portion of bacon and guacamole were generous. The guacamole was mildly spicy. It could have been a little spicier without losing any other flavors. Rating: 4/5

One thing I would like to see added to the menu is Dr. Pepper. There is a scene in the movie where Forrest drinks 15 Dr. Peppers right before he meets JFK. It would be cool if you could order one as well. If it’s too hard to co-mingle with the existing products, add it as a bottled specialty drink.

“Run, Forrest, Run” to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and “Stop, Forrest, Stop” for some great Southern food!
