It’s more than just fun and games at the Sandbox Melrose in Los Angeles, California

On September 1, 2016, TBC Hospitality Group added a new restaurant to their portfolio, Sandbox Melrose. You can eat, drink, and play in this new bar & lounge setting.

The exterior is reminiscent of being near the beach complete with lifeguard chair.

The bar area is a bit on the dim side but the backlit liquor shelves and recessed light under the bar light your way.

The windows swivel and extend the interior out. With its prime corner location, the cross-breeze is perfect.

High reclaimed wood tables and arcade/pinball games line the perimeter along with lounge chairs for a more intimate experience.

In the back, there is a large area housing skee-ball and giant jenga. It also has its own bar area for private parties and corporate events.

Upstairs, there is another event space with its own bar area and big enough for corporate events or private parties like birthdays, bachelorette parties, etc.

Let’s take a look at the food and drink:

Sunburn ($10) is made with tequila, orange liqueur, muddled jalapeno, lemon juice, ginger syrup, orange juice, lime juice, and sour mix. It tastes like a margarita with a spicy jalapeno kick. Rating: 4.5/5

Brisket Tacos ($10) are three tacos made chopped brisket and topped with fresh chutney mango salsa. These are very unique. The brisket flavor is good, but the meat is just a little overdone and dry. However, the mango chutney helps to offset this by adding a refreshing sweetness. The flour tortilla adds a chewy texture. Rating: 4.3/5

Billy Goat ($15) is a Neapolitan pizza topped with goat cheese, mozzarella, asparagus, crispy bacon, roasted garlic, and scallions. This pizza is very light in flavor and could use a sprinkle of sea salt. The crust is denser than normal pizza dough and is more like sourdough bread. The bacon, unfortunately, is way overdone and very hard versus being crisp. Bacon needs to be lightly cooked if it is going to be re-fired in the oven on a pizza so it does not get burnt or hard on the second cook. Rating: 3.8/5

The Boss ($15) is a prime grade ground in-house burger topped with a bleu cheese melt, sweet onion marmalade, and applewood smoked bacon. This burger is juicy but could be cooked to a lesser degree of doneness. The meat is a very good grade so even medium-rare would be fine. The in-house grind is very flavorful. I love bleu cheese on burgers and it works excellently in this case. The brioche bun is soft yet still holds up to the juicy burger. The bacon, unfortunately, is again overdone and hard. I also love the crinkle cut fries on the side! Rating: 4.3/5

If you’re looking to eat, drink, and play, there’s plenty of room in the Sandbox Melrose!
