It’s back to basics at Square One Pizza Café in Irvine, California

Owners Kyle and Liz Gillies always dreamed of owning their own restaurant. The concept for Square One Pizza Café came about after being the founding chef/executive of Bagby Pizza Co. in Baltimore. Kyle applied his back-of-the-house knowledge to the development side of the restaurant business through start-up, launch, and continued success of a thriving enterprise. Liz has front-of-the-house and management experience due to her recent work as General Manager and Wine Buyer for Pascal Restaurant in Newport Beach. Like a perfect marriage and partnership, the Gillies applied their knowledge and opened Square One Pizza Café in Irvine. Their vision - to make delicious food combined with a casual, family-friendly atmosphere, and excellent customer service. Liz is always making sure guests are enjoying their meals and Kyle is manning the reigns of the well-oiled kitchen machine for quick service.

The interior of the restaurant reminds me of an artist’s loft with open ceiling, lots of windows for light, reclaimed wood tables and counters, and inviting tangerine-colored booths.

Spicy Shrimp Linguini ($14) is made with sautéed shrimp and linguini tossed in spicy marinara sauce. The pasta is perfectly cooked to al dente. The marinara maintains a spiciness that can creep up on you and a robust yet slight tangy flavor. The shrimp are perfectly cooked with a healthy snap to them. Parmesan helps to cut out some of the heat if it is a little too spicy for you. Rating: 4.3/5

Meatball Sub ($9.25) is made with house-made meatballs, marinara sauce, and mozzarella cheese atop a baguette served with your choice of soup of the day, side salad, or homemade chips. The meatballs seem to need a richer, beefy flavor, a little salt, and maybe less breadcrumbs. The texture is also a bit too soft. It is a very easy and simple sandwich to eat. A side of marinara for dipping would be great as well. The homemade potato chips are very good with a crispy texture and rich kettle flavor. Rating: 3.7/5

Charred Steak Pizza ($12 for 10”, $18 for 14”) is topped with marinated steak, roasted corn, roasted red peppers, red onions, manchego cheese, topped with sour cream and cilantro. This pizza is a like a backyard summer barbeque with the grilled steak and roasted corn paired with a fiesta twist of peppers, cheese, sour cream and cilantro. It is very unique in taste for a pizza. The pizza is thin crust like flatbread with crispy, bubbly texture. A salty component like olives would really put this over the top. Rating: 4.4/5

Dream Bomba ($8) is made with creamy peanut butter gelato, caramel core, milk chocolate shell, and chocolate and caramel drizzle. Picture Reese’s meets Snickers in ice cream form. The peanut butter gelato is very light and the chocolate melts luxuriously on the tongue. Caramel lends a sweet buttery flavor. Rating: 4.5/5
