On April 15, 1998, Teddy and Rich opened the first Teddy’s Bigger Burgers in Honolulu, HI near Diamondhead. Since then, Teddy’s Bigger Burgers has opened 10 locations on Oahu, 1 on Maui, 3 in Washington, 1 in Iowa, 1 in Japan, and 1 in the Philippines. On November 1, 2014, brother-sister team, Bao Duong and Vivian Dinh, added another location in Fullerton, CA, the first location in California. Vivian has been to Hawaii many times and found Teddy’s Bigger Burgers on her travels. She knew that she wanted to start her own business and this was a dream come true. Vivian runs the day to day operations from the front and back of the house. Bao works behind the scenes, focusing on marketing and vendor relations. Both have a can-do attitude with the warmth of the aloha spirit in their ways.
Yes, it’s burgers, but it’s not fast food. Everything is made to order just for you. When the food comes to the table, you’ll know it’s totally worth the time. The Teddy’s burgers and sandwiches are on a potato bun (you can also choose whole wheat or lettuce wrap) layered with Teddy’s homemade special sauce, green leaf lettuce, Claussen dill pickles, thinly shaven white sweet onion, fresh ripe tomatoes, Teddy’s Gourmet burger seasoning, and 100% ground chuck steer proprietary grind patty (choose from 5, 7, or 9 oz. size).
Garlic Butter Fries have a light garlic flavor with melted parmesan cheese on top. The fries are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Rating: 4.3/5
Bacado is a Teddy’s burger topped with bacon, cheddar, and avocado. This is an avocado lover’s burger! The burger is juicy and flavorful. The avocado is creamy. The vegetables are fresh and add texture to the burger. The potato bun is soft, tender, and absorbs the juices from the burger. Tater tots are crispy on the outside and buttery on the inside. Rating: 5/5
Volcano (with substitute of grilled chicken breast instead of a beef patty) is topped with pepperjack and jalapenos. It is on the spicier side of the spectrum with a healthy kick from the jalapenos. The chicken breast is tender and juicy. The vegetables add texture and refreshing flavor. Teddy’s special sauce adds a balancing sweetness. The beer battered onion rings are definitely a cut above the average ring. They pair well with this sandwich. Rating: 4.8/5
Western is topped with bacon, cheddar, onion rings, and BBQ sauce. The burger is juicy. The cheese and salty bacon balance out the sweet BBQ and Teddy’s sauce. The awesome onions rings make an appearance in this burger and add a crispy texture. The fries are good, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Rating: 4/5
Kailua (9 oz. patty in this case) is topped with teriyaki sauce, grilled onions, Swiss, and mushrooms. The 9 oz. patty is huge! You can’t even see the bottom bun under the patty. This burger is messy but worth it, just grab lots of napkins. Sweet and savory blend for perfectly balanced flavor. Since there is so much sauce on this burger, it overpowers the bottom bun making it very soggy. Less sauce or toasting the inner surface of the bun would help alleviate the sogginess factor. Rating: 4.5/5
Furi-Mon Burger is a salmon burger basted in homemade teriyaki sauce, flame-grilled and topped with furikake. It is a meaty salmon burger, similar to ones you find at Costco. The burger is a little dry. It needs to be cooked less or encrusted with the furikake to lock in the juices. The teriyaki sauce is a bit light and does not deter from the salmon flavor. The sandwich definitely needs more furikake as it will bring a more umami flavor to the burger. Rating: 3.3/5
Pina Colada Shake is hand-scooped and extra thick. The shake is so thick that the straw stands straight up. It has a perfect balance of sweet pineapple and rich coconut flavors. Rating: 5/5
Chocolate Haupia Shake tastes just like an ice cold Mounds bar in shake form. The rich chocolate and coconut flavor really come through. It is good, but it doesn’t really taste like haupia. Rating: 4.5/5
