Roti Mama serves up Malaysian cuisine in Huntington Beach, California

Nur Alwi couldn’t find Malaysian restaurants in Orange County and would need to cook her homeland’s food when she was craving it. With support of her family, she opened Roti Mama on October 3, 2014. Using family recipes, Nur entices your senses with herbs and spices that, in their root forms, come from Chinese, South Indian, and Malay cuisines. Malaysian cuisine reflects the history of cultural migrations and colonization. Roti Mama upholds the flavors of Malaysia in an intimate, non-descript corner unit in a small strip mall. The service is polite and attentive.

Mama Teh Tarik Milk has a sweet milk tea flavor. The flavor of the tea is not too strong. If you love milk tea, you’ll love this. Rating: 4/5

Bandung Rose Syrup Milk looks like Strawberry Quik. The beautiful pink hue makes you want to taste strawberry but a hint of rose is actually experienced. Rating: 4.5/5

Roti Beef Murtabak is filled with beef and onion. The best way to describe it is an Asian crepe. The beef and onion filling is almost like an omelet with slight curry flavor. Each bite is best with the curry sauce and pieces of pickled onion creating the perfect umami flavor. The curry sauce is addictively delicious! Rating: 4.5/5

Mee Goreng is stir-fried yellow egg noodles with spices and chicken. It is similar to chicken chow mein but different. The spices are Asian and Indian with a slightly spicy kick. The chicken absorbs a lot of the flavors for a power-packed dish. Rating: 4.5/5

Kerutuk is sauce simmered in spices, potatoes, and beef. It is slightly spicy. The beef is a little chewy but has a really good flavor. Using a different cut or simmering the beef longer will help to make it tender. The potatoes are soft and just melt in your mouth. Rating: 3.8/5

Kankung Belachan is water spinach in a spiced shrimp paste. The water spinach has a spinach texture but has a greener flavor. The shrimp paste is spicy and salty but perfectly balances with the flavor of the water spinach. Rating: 4/5

Masak Lemak Chili Padi with Yellow Sauce is simmered in spices, coconut milk, and tiger prawns. The Yellow Sauce is addictive with bright turmeric flavor. You can put it on anything and it will taste good. The prawns are a little overcooked and also need to be deveined. Maybe cooking the prawns separately and then adding it to the sauce right before plating would help keep it perfectly cooked. Rating: 4.5/5

Whole Fried Fish Sambal is a whole fried fish topped with homemade sambal. The sambal is rich, thick, and spicy. The sambal is overpowering and the fish is indecipherable. It might be best to serve the sauce on the side. It would also keep the skin of the fish crispy instead of soggy from the sambal. Rating: 4/5

Fried Bananas are served with pandan ice cream. The bananas are fried to crispy perfection. The sweet banana inside becomes a pudding, custard-like texture inside. Pandan ice cream is very different. It has young coconut and taro flavors. The texture is creamy and fluffy. Rating: 3.8/5
